When Jerry Portnoy agreed to make a recording with us in Austin, TX, we knew that another dream was about to come true. What we didn't know is that we would be making a good friend for life. Jerry had been 'secretly' promoting us among his musical friends. He wears a big smile on his face every time Victor blows the harmonica, and shakes his head every time we cover some Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. We cannot thank him enough to be part of our lives and musical adventures.

about

"I was pleased and honored when The Suitcase Brothers asked me to guest on their CD. The fact that it would be recorded in austin was an added inducement. I first came to Austin with Muddy Waters in 1975. James Cotton and Paul Oscher, both of whom preceded me as the harp player in Muddy's band now live in Austin and so it would be a rare opportunity for the three of us to get together. Paul eventually wound up on the recording session as well, contributing a stinging slide solo on "She's a troublemaker". The main purpose of my return to Austin, however, was to lend whatever support I could, musical or otherwise, to te Suitcase Brothers, who ought to have the kind of recognition, respect and rewards equal to their great talent, but as someone once told me, "The music business is not a good thing to get into if you have an exaggerated sense of justice". If it were a truly just world and only the greatest musicians received the greatest rewards in the form of public acclaim and the money that follows it, the Suitcase Brothers would certainly be drenched in fame and riches. The artistry, taste and virtuosity that they display in their music, across a wide variety of blues styles from Piedmont to the Delta to Chicago with '40s swing thrown in, has few if any equals and justice would demand they be properly rewarded. Just listen to the infectious exuberance of " You'd Better Mind" or "This is the right time" with their uncanny reincarnation of Sonny and Brownie or their take on the Louis Jordan classic "Knock Me a Kiss" featuring Santos' sly relaxed vocal and Victor's stunning, unparalleled harmonica genius. This cries out for JUSTICE!
